Chess tournament dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Heydar Aliyev, the National Leader of Azerbaijani People, was held in California

The chess tournament dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Heydar Aliyev, the National Leader of Azerbaijani People, was held on May 18-20 in San Diego, California, USA, with the initiative and support of the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles.

Azerbaijani chess grandmaster Vasif Durarbeyli, who visited California on May 18 at the invitation of the Consulate General, held an exhibition match with the 2022 US champion among 13-year-old chess players and sports master Isaac Wang at the La Jolla-Riford Library in San Diego. Later, V.Durarbeyli gave a masterclass to the chess players who came to watch the exhibition match and informed the chess fans about Azerbaijan and its history of chess.

On May 19, V. Durarbeyli took part in a live morning program on KUSI TV channel and informed viewers about our country and chess. Later that day, a dinner was organized for the meeting of San Diego public and political figures with V. Durarbayli and the representative of the Consulate General. At the meeting, V. Durarbayli was thanked for visiting the city on behalf of the community of San Diego, and positive thoughts about Azerbaijan were expressed.

On May 20, fourty young American chess players between the ages of 8 and 18 competed in the "5th San Diego - Azerbaijan Youth Chess Tournament" dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Heydar Aliyev, the National Leader of Azerbaijani People, at the Corona Library. The winners of the first 3 places were awarded with certificates of achievement and gifts by the Consulate General of Azerbaijan.

Vasif Durarbeyli informed the participants of the tournament about the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, and his contribution in the formation of modern Azerbaijan, his role in the development of chess in our country and famous chess players who always had his support.
